Frank R. Conniff was a Pulitzer prize winning journalst who spent the better part of his career working for Hearst newspapers. Among other positions, he was an editor at The World Journal Tribune (1966-1967) and The New York Journal-American, where he published a regular column titled "East Side, West Side" throughout the mid-1940s and early 1950s. During both World War II and the Korean War, Conniff was posted overseas and won an Overseas Press Club Award and a George Holmes Award for his foreign reporting in 1944 and 1947, respectively. He won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 1956 for his series of interviews at the Kremlin with Nikita Khrushchev, an honor he shared with William Randolph Hearst and J. Kingsbury Smith. In 1958, he was named general director of the Hearst Headline Service, a news feature agency, for which he also wrote a column titled "Capital Corner." He subsequently also published a column in New York called "Conniff's Corner." In 1964, Conniff ran as the Democratic candidate to the House of Representatives in the 26th district which included the eastern portion of Westchester County in New York. He lost to Ogden R. Reid, a Republican, whose father owned The Herald Tribune.
